Hey there. Glad you found my website.

Inspired by three years of teaching high school in the Bronx, I first tried my hand at playwriting with Why You Beasting?, a gritty, hard-hitting satire.

It’s about an idealistic first-year teacher who cannot tame, let alone teach his wildly undisciplined students, so he deliberately tries to get tossed in “the rubber room,” a detention center for teachers accused of impropriety.

Its sold-out run at the NYC Fringe Festival earned rave reviews (available on PRESS page), including a four-star “Critics Pick” in TimeOut New York.

Why You Beasting? was one of only six shows selected for the Fringe Encore Series and transferred for another celebrated run at the Players Theatre in the West Village.

Selections from Why You Beasting were published in the Smith and Kraus anthology 222 More Comedy Monologues, 2 Minutes and Under, available for purchase in PUBLICATIONS.

Soon after the success of Why You Beasting?, I joined the creative team of Goodbye New York, a new musical that is part romantic comedy, part social drama.

It’s about a spirited young woman indulging her final day in New York City, when of all people, she runs into “the one that got away” after ten years apart. Although their romance is rekindled, the joy is short-lived, as she’s hiding a dark secret—one that will turn their world upside down and tear them apart forever.

In 2022 it was honored with a sold-out concert at Feinstein's 54Below, as well as an industry presentation, both starring Arielle Jacobs (Here Lies Love and Aladdin on Broadway), Brad Standley (Waitress National Tour), and Ben Jeffrey (The Lion King on Broadway). Goodbye New York was then optioned by Tony-winning producer Van Dean (Jagged Little Pill), and is currently in development for production in London or a regional theatre.

Next I created Bacon Clickbait, a ten-minute, darkly comic satire that packed more of a punch than I ever thought possible. It’s about a man so engrossed in Facebook arguments that he cannot be bothered to attend his own father’s funeral.

It was first selected for a staged reading at Phoenix Theatre Company’s Festival of New American Theatre, and was directed by Chanel Bragg (Artistic Director, Arizona Theater Company). It was then blessed with a full production at the New York New Works Festival, where despite the play’s brief length, made it through the semifinals and was chosen as a finalist by a panelist of producers. Next it was selected for production at Theatreworks in New Milford, CT, where it was also honored as a finalist.

Excerpts from Bacon Clickbait were selected for publication in an anthology titled The Best Men’s Stage Monologues of 2021, available for purchase in PUBLICATIONS.

More recently, and with the help of my two sons, I wrote It Wasn't Me, a full-length comedy about a father and son who shoplift and fence items on Ebay to avoid eviction after the wife and mom in their lives runs away to chase her Hollywood dreams.

It Wasn’t Me was honored by winning the Scribe Playwriting Competition’s Marsha A. Croyle Award for outstanding achievement in playwriting and I am currently submitting it nationwide for production consideration.

Additionally, I have written multiple full-length plays, short plays, television pilots, a feature film, and am currently branching out into literary fiction with multiple works of flash fiction and a novel manuscript.

My work is often unapologetic, blending humor with drama, and I am unafraid to take wild rides and daring risks with character, story, and language. Sometimes it gets dark, but never without a sense of humor. I think of my work as realistic with the volume turned up, often crossing into satire, sometimes even into farce.

My inspirations range from William Shakespeare and Christopher Durang to Anthony Bourdain and Hunter S. Thompson, and I am always open to collaboration on the right project.

I would be more than happy to share any of my works with you upon request. Please feel free to reach out at daviddonmiller@gmail.com, or my linked social media pages.
